Garter or No Garter?

Sticking with traditions on your wedding day is really up to the couple... well sometimes with a little more influence from the mother-in-law ;) but choosing what to wear should be solely up to the couple! Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue are old traditions that carry a symbol of luck throughout a Bride's big day. Another tradition that is up to the Bride on the big day is whether or not she wants to wear a garter. We have some of the history behind the old tradition of the famous garter toss to help you make your decision a little easier!

The History:

The wedding garter is one of the OLDEST traditions from the dark ages. After the ceremony and reception were said and done, the remaining guests would escort the newlyweds back to their suite to make sure they arrived safely and for good luck a guest would take home a piece of the Bride's clothing. Not long after that got old, the ritual made its change into the roaring 20's where guests would jump on the bride ripping off her clothes with the intention of getting a piece of her dress or garter for good luck. After it was decided that the Brides valued their dresses too much, (which who doesn't?!), the garter was then just used for the basic use to hold up the Bride's stockings and it would get tossed to all of the guests and to whomever caught it, it was considered good luck. And after THAT, whoever caught it was the next to be married and that my friends, is where the tradition still stands!

After learning a little bit about why we incorporate the garters into our wedding day, we have some ideas on how you can mix it up! 

You can have one garter to keep for a keepsake and even get it customized with your wedding date and then get one to toss! 

If you have a theme to your wedding, you can add a little something on it to make it more fitting.
